Skateboard Chassis
A Chassis is the term given to the base frame of a motor vehicle. It refers to the frame, wheels and machinery on which the body is supported.
This image clearly shows the base frame, axles and wheels. The next step for designers would be to place the engine and body of the vehicle on to the chassis.
All cars are manufactured in a similar way using a combination of robotics on production lines and human labour. In recent years the introduction of alternative fuel sources are allowing car manufacturers to move away from traditional methods and explore new possibilities. This is how the skateboard chassis concept has developed.
A Skateboard Chassis is different to traditional chassis in that the engine and power source for the vehicle is enclosed within the chassis. This type of design thinking allows for greater flexibility and customisation for people’s needs. If people were wanting to update their vehicle, a new ‘shell’ or ‘body’ could be purchased and fitted to the existing skateboard chassis. Watch the video on Skateboard Chassis explaining this concept in greater detail.
Tesla motors are leading the car manufacturing industry in electric cars. They have created a car design using the skateboard chassis concept known as the Tesla Model S.
